That is a very good questions. Since their introduction by public authorities in the 1990s to distinguish environmentally friendly products and services, the number of eco-labels has boomed. So it is difficult to know which ones are serious and which ones are not.
To my knowledge, here are two ways to proceed:
Check if the eco-label you see on your product is legit or made up: Normally the products you find in your country should not display fake labels as they are regulated, but better safe than sorry. I would recommend you to check your label if you have a doubt. Here is an extensive list of those labels: http://www.ecolabelindex.com/ecolabels/
Know your local eco-labels: I don't know which ones are the most trustable among those almost 500 labels, but anyway it is very unlikely that you will encounter all of them. For example, only two official eco-labels are awarded in France: the NF-Environnement eco-label and the European eco-label. I bet that you don't need to know more than 10 eco-labels in your daily life.
